Kyphosis or Scheuermann’s disease

When the upper part of the spine presents a forward arch of the back, forming a hunched or stooped posture, it is called Kyphosis. Kyphosis can occur at any age, but it is more common in older women. In these cases, Kyphosis is caused by weak bones in the spine, causing them to break and become tight. Kyphosis can also appear at an early age, but it is the result of malformations or fractures in the spine.

Causes

Kyphosis occurs when the vertebrae in the upper back have an abnormal bow. Abnormal vertebrae develop due to any of the following factors:

  • Fractures

  • Osteoporosis

  • Disc degeneration Scheuermann's disease, a type of kyphosis that occurs in children and adolescents in the growth stage of bones Congenital anomalies

  • Syndromes such as Ehlers-Danlos and Marfan, in children

  • Cancer and cancer treatments. These can weaken the spine Symptoms.

Symptoms

When kyphosis is in its early stages, there may be no visible symptoms. Still, some people experience discomfort, pain, or stiffness in the back, and an unusual curvature in the spine may be observed.

Diagnosis

The Orthopedist will perform a physical exam and ask to lean the torso forward to check the spine's position from the side. As part of the physical exam, a neurological exam may be done to check reflexes and strength in the muscles. Later, the doctor may also request the following tests:

Treatment

The treatment will depend on how severe the symptoms are. The goal is to relieve pain and improve flexibility in the spine. The Orthopedist may recommend over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen sodium. Still, if that is not enough, he or she may prescribe more potent prescription pain relievers.  To strengthen the bones and prevent fractures, the doctor may prescribe medications for osteoporosis.

Physical therapy can help with some types of kyphosis. Stretching exercises can help improve flexibility in the spine and with pain. In the case of children with Scheuerman's disease, a supporting device may be suggested, while the bones continue to grow.

Surgery can be an option in advanced cases when due to the exaggerated curvature of the spine, the medulla or nerve roots are oppressed.
